Short answer: no. Booking a video consultation is open to everyone, including free accounts — a subscription changes what you pay, not whether you can book.
Booking is open to all accounts
You can book a call with a vet from any Ask A Vet account, with or without a paid plan. You'll be asked to pay for the consultation itself at checkout, but nothing blocks you from reaching that step.
This is different from Chats with AI Vet and Chats with Vet, which are Premium features — tapping those rows on a free account opens the upgrade screen instead.
What Premium changes
Premium subscribers pay a discounted rate for consultations. You can see both prices side by side in the Call pricing modal, which shows Premium subscription: prices with a Save {amount} badge above the Regular: prices.
| Your plan | Can you book? | What you pay per call |
|---|---|---|
| Free account | Yes | Regular rate |
| Tracker Plan | Yes | Regular rate |
| Premium | Yes | Discounted rate |
Please note: the discount applies to Premium only. If you're on the Tracker Plan, you pay the regular consultation rate — the Tracker Plan does not unlock the telehealth discount.
No consultations are included for free
No plan includes a monthly allowance of consultations. Every call — Free, Tracker Plan or Premium — is charged individually when you book it. This is why the subscription screen describes the benefit as "Telehealth: {price} per call" rather than as a number of included calls.
Tip: the price you pay is worked out at the moment you book. If you upgrade to Premium and then book, the discounted rate applies to that booking; upgrading after you've paid does not change a booking you already made.
For what each plan includes overall, see the Subscription & Billing section of this help centre.
