The I'm a Pet Owner / I'm a Veterinarian choice on the login sheet isn't cosmetic — it decides which account we look you up in. Picking the wrong one is the single most common reason a login fails, so it's worth understanding.
Why the choice matters
Pet-owner accounts and veterinarian accounts are stored and looked up separately. When you tap Log In, Ask A Vet searches for your account using both your email address and the role you selected.
That has two consequences:
- If you choose the wrong role, login fails with exactly the same message as a wrong password — even though your email and password are perfectly correct.
- The same email address can hold a pet-owner account and a veterinarian account, completely independently of each other.
Which one is right for you?
| Card | What it says | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| I'm a Pet Owner | "Care for your pets and get expert veterinary support." | You're using Ask A Vet for your own pets: pet profiles, AI Vet Chat, telehealth consults, trackers and family sharing. |
| I'm a Veterinarian | "Help pet owners and manage your veterinary practice." | The Ask A Vet team has set up a veterinarian account for you. |
Important: veterinarian accounts can't be created in the app. If you select Veterinarian and tap Create an account, you'll see "Vet accounts are invite-only — Please contact your admin to create a veterinarian account."
How to change your role
- On the Login screen, look at the role card near the top.
- Tap Change.
- Pick the correct card and tap Continue.
- Enter your email and password again and tap Log In.
Tip: if you tap Log In without choosing a role at all, you'll see "Please choose whether you're signing in as a Pet Owner or Veterinarian."
Your role choice is remembered until you log out — logging out resets it, so the sheet appears again next time.
