You've looked for a Leave family option on the My family tab and there isn't one — or you've seen the message "Family owners cannot leave the group." That's expected, and here's what to do instead.
Why it works this way
Every Ask A Vet account has its own family and is always its owner. Yours isn't something you joined, so there's nothing to leave — it's simply the container your shared pets and invited members sit in. Leave family only appears for families you've joined, in the Joined families tab.
What to do instead
If you want your family to stop sharing anything, empty it:
- Open Settings → Family Sharing → Shared pets and stop sharing each pet. Confirm at "Stop sharing this pet?" for each one.
- Go to the My family tab, open each member, tap the trash icon and confirm Remove.
- Cancel any invitations that are still pending, using the same trash icon.
Your family is then just you, sharing nothing — which is exactly the same as never having used the feature. It won't cost you anything and it won't appear anywhere for anyone else.
Please note: Removing members and stopping sharing are always free. You don't need an active subscription to tidy up your family.
About "transfer ownership"
The message mentions transferring ownership first. Handing your family over to someone else isn't something you can do in the app today. [CONFIRM: whether family ownership transfer will be offered, and the intended steps]
If the person you want to hand over to needs their own family, they already have one — they can invite people and share their own pets from their own account.
Tip: Closing your Ask A Vet account does dissolve the family you own, but that's a much bigger step. See the article on account deletion before going that route.
