Chat with a Vet is a text conversation with a real, licensed veterinarian, right inside the Ask A Vet app. Every conversation is about one specific pet, so the vet always knows exactly who they're advising on.
What it is
- A written conversation with a qualified vet — you type your question, they reply in the same thread
- Always tied to one pet: your pet's name, photo and species travel with the conversation
- You can send photos, videos, documents and voice notes as part of the conversation
What it isn't
- It isn't AI Vet Chat. AI Vet Chat gives you instant automated answers; Chat with a Vet connects you to a person. See the AI Chat section of this help center for that feature.
- It isn't a video call. Booking a call with a vet is a separate option — see the Video Consultations section of this help center.
- It isn't an emergency service. Our Terms are explicit on this point.
Important: vet chats are not emergency services. If your pet needs urgent help, contact your local vet or animal emergency line directly.
Who can use it
Chat with a Vet is a Premium feature. The pet's owner must be on an active Premium plan.

Premium applies to every active pet on your account, not just one pet. If a pet is shared with you through family sharing, you can use vet chat on it as long as the owner is on Premium and has given you permission.
What's included
Premium includes 2 Certified Vet Chats per month, shared across your whole household. AI Vet Chat is unlimited on the same plan.
How a chat runs, start to finish
- Pick a pet, choose a topic and describe your concern, then tap Send to Vet.
- You land on Waiting for a Vet while your request is picked up.
- A vet joins and the live Vet Chat screen opens.
- The chat ends when you end it, the vet ends it, or nobody sends a message for 24 hours.
- A written summary of the conversation is saved to the Chat summary screen.
Where to find your chats
Open the Consults tab and switch to Vet Chats, or open a pet's profile and tap Consults → Chats with Vet to see only that pet's conversations.
