You can take a pet back out of Family Sharing at any time, and it happens immediately. Here's how — and exactly what your family loses when you do.
Stop sharing
- Open Settings → Family Sharing.
- Go to the Shared pets tab.
- Tap the pet.
- Tap the red Stop sharing button.
- Confirm at "Stop sharing this pet?" — "Your family members will lose access to this pet." — by tapping Stop sharing.
You'll see "Pet is no longer shared" and the pet drops off the Shared pets tab.
Please note: This works even if your subscription has lapsed. Stopping sharing is never blocked by your plan.
Who's allowed to do this
Either the pet's owner or the family owner can stop sharing a pet. Other family members can't.
What happens straight away
- Every other active family member loses access to the pet — it disappears from their pet list, along with its records, calendar events and tracker.
- They each get a notification: "{Your name} stopped sharing {pet name}" — "{pet name} is no longer shared with the family."
- Any QR pet tags that were activated for that pet through Family Sharing are released. They go back to being unused, so you can claim them again on another pet.
Tip: If you only want to limit what one person can do — rather than cut everyone off — change that member's permissions instead of un-sharing the pet.
Sharing it again later
Nothing is lost permanently. Share the pet again from Shared pets → Share a pet whenever you're ready, and your family gets access back under whatever permissions they have at the time. Note that re-sharing does need an active paid plan.
