Firmware is the software running inside the tracker itself, and Ask A Vet publishes updates to improve tracking, battery behaviour and reliability. Your tracker has two separate firmwares that update in completely different ways — which is why the app shows two cards.
Where you'll see them
- Open your pet's profile.
- Tap GPS tracker settings.
- Tap Tracker info ("Device details & sync").
- Look under Firmware updates for Main firmware (badged MAIN) and Module firmware (badged MODULE).
Main firmware vs Module firmware
| Main firmware | Module firmware | |
|---|---|---|
| Badge | MAIN | MODULE |
| What it runs | The part of the tracker that handles the mobile network and GPS | The Bluetooth part of the tracker |
| How it's delivered | The tracker downloads the update itself, over the mobile network | There's no way for the tracker to fetch this one on its own, so your phone sends the file to it over Bluetooth |
| What you need | The tracker powered on and connected. Your phone isn't involved at all, so it doesn't matter whether you're near your pet | The tracker close by, Bluetooth on, and the app open on screen while it transfers |
Important: A Bluetooth connection does not help with a Main firmware update. The two firmwares run on physically separate parts inside the tracker, and the Main one can only be updated over the mobile network.
Which updates you'll be offered
- Updates are published per hardware version, so a tracker is only offered firmware built for it. Two trackers on the same account can legitimately be offered different things — or one may have an update while the other doesn't.
- You'll only be offered a version newer than what's already installed.
- Not every tracker supports Module updates. If yours doesn't report a Bluetooth firmware version, the card reads Not supported and there's nothing to install.
Please note: Tracker features, including firmware updates, need an active paid plan. See the Subscription & Billing section of this help center for what's included.
