You don't have to watch the app to know what's happening with your chat. Here's exactly what we send you, and when.
Emails you'll receive
| When it's sent | Subject line |
|---|---|
| Your vet joins your chat | "\<Dr. Vet> is ready to chat about \<your pet's name>" |
| Your vet ends the chat | "Your chat with \<Dr. Vet> has ended" |
| A chat closes without being completed | "No vet response — your chat couldn't go ahead" |
When your vet joins
It tells you "\<vet name> just joined your chat about \<your pet's name>. Open the app to start the conversation.", shows the vet, the pet and the time they accepted, and has an Open chat button that takes you straight into the conversation.
When your vet ends the chat
"Your conversation about \<your pet's name> with \<vet name> has ended. The full chat history and any notes are saved in your app for reference." It shows the vet, the pet, the duration and when it ended, plus View summary and Start a new chat buttons.
When a chat closes without being completed
This is the email you get when a chat closes itself after 24 hours with no messages — including when your vet had already joined and replied, so don't read the subject line too literally. It includes a Book a new chat button and the reminder that if your pet's situation has become urgent, you should contact your local vet or animal emergency line directly.
When we don't email you
- When you cancel a request that's still waiting
- When you end the chat yourself — in that case your vet is notified instead
Please note: if an email fails to send it never affects your chat. The conversation carries on as normal.
Push notifications
New messages in a vet chat arrive as a push notification: the sender's name is the title and the message text is the body. Tapping it opens that vet chat.
For this to work you need to be signed in and to have allowed notifications for Ask A Vet on your phone.
[CONFIRM: whether a push notification is also sent at the moment a vet joins, or whether that is email-only]
Tip: AI Vet Chat doesn't send push notifications — only vet chats do.
Turning emails off
Every vet chat email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom: https://askavet.com/unsubscribe
