How to start an AI Vet Chat

Starting a chat with AI Vet takes two taps and a pet. There's no waiting, no topic to choose and no queue — the conversation opens straight away.

Jump to:

  • Route 1 — the Ask A Vet menu
  • Route 2 — the Consults tab
  • Route 3 — the pet's profile

Before you start

  • You need an active Premium plan (on shared pets, the pet owner needs it).
  • You need at least one pet profile. If your account has no pets, the pet picker shows "No pets yet" — "You don't have any pets yet. Add a pet to start using AI Chat and get instant health guidance." — with an Add pet button.

Route 1 — the Ask A Vet menu

  1. Tap the floating Ask A Vet button in the middle of the tab bar.
  2. Tap Chat with AI Vet.
  3. On the welcome screen, tap Select a pet to begin.
  4. Pick your pet from the list ("Select a pet to start chatting with AI.").

The chat opens immediately.

Route 2 — the Consults tab

  1. Open the Consults tab.
  2. Swipe to AI Chats.
  3. If you haven't had an AI chat yet, the empty state offers a Chat with AI Vet button — tap it.
  4. Choose your pet.

Please note: that button only appears while the AI Chats list is empty. Once you have conversations in the list, use Route 1 or Route 3 to start a new one.

Route 3 — the pet's profile

  1. Open your pet's profile → Consults.
  2. Tap Chats with AI Vet.
  3. On \<your pet's name>'s AI Chats, tap Ask AI Vet about \<your pet's name>.

Tip: this route is the quickest when you already know which pet you want to ask about — and it shows that pet's past AI chats at the same time.

What happens first

AI Vet opens with a greeting like: "Hi Sam Taylor, I'm here to help with Bella. What's going on today?"

Describe what's going on in your own words. Expect a couple of clarifying questions before you get guidance — the assistant asks at least two on a first symptom report, and at least three across the conversation, so it isn't guessing.

Please note: unlike a chat with a real vet, AI chats have no topic-selection step. Picking the pet is the last step.

One open chat per pet

You can only have one open AI chat per pet at a time. If one is already running, you'll see Open chat already exists with the option to Open Chat and carry on where you left off.

You can, however, have an AI chat and a real vet chat open for the same pet at once — they're counted separately.
