Walk tracking turns a walk with your pet into a saved record: the route on a map, how far you went, how long it took and your average speed. Here's what it is and where to find it.
How a walk works
Your phone records the route while a Bluetooth connection to your pet's GPS tracker confirms your pet is genuinely with you. That Bluetooth link is what makes it a walk with your pet rather than just a map of where your phone went.
Because the phone is doing the recording, walk points also refresh where your pet appears on the map during the walk.
What you need
- A GPS tracker that is paired and assigned to the pet you want to walk
- Bluetooth switched on, with the collar close enough to connect
- Location permission for the Ask A Vet app
Walk tracking is available in the pet owner side of the app. Family members need permission to view the pet's GPS tracker before they can open a walk. [CONFIRM: whether walk tracking and Activity & stats require an active tracker plan]
Please note: There is no phone-only walk mode. A walk always needs a tracker assigned to a pet plus a live Bluetooth connection to it.
Where to find it
- Open your pet's profile.
- Go to the GPS Tracker screen.
- In the action row next to LIVE, tap Walk.
The walk sheet opens, titled Walk {your pet's name}. While a walk is running, the button reads Walking….
What a walk records
While the walk runs, the sheet shows three figures:
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Time | Active walking time only — paused stretches don't count |
| Distance (km) | Shown to two decimal places |
| Avg. speed (km/h) | Shown to one decimal place |
Please note: Walks are recorded in kilometres and km/h. There is no miles option at the moment.
Walks and activity goals
Walks do not add to your pet's activity goals. Your pet's collar already measures their own steps, distance and active minutes while you're out, so counting your phone's route on top would double up. See "Do walks count toward my pet's activity goals?" for the full explanation.
Where finished walks go
Every completed walk is saved in two places:
- The Walk history section at the bottom of the walk sheet
- Your pet's location Timeline, as a card titled Walk
Walks never appear as trips or stays — they're kept as their own kind of entry.
